Dutch festivals and nightclubs shut for another month

Festivals and nightclubs in the Netherlands will be closed until August 14th. A sharp increase in Covid-19 cases, particularly among under 30s, has led to a U-turn in the Dutch reopening plan. As DutchNews reports, cases have increased seven-fold since nightlife reopened on June 26th. Prime minister Mark Rutte held a press conference last Friday, July 9th, to announce the decision, following 7,000 new cases reported in the 24 hours prior. Seated venues will be allowed to continue admitting guests who can show a negative test, though the midnight curfew will be reimposed. The new rules also require tests to be within 24 hours of entry, not 40, as was the case previously. Nightclubs and festivals aren’t permitted to open at all. A cabinet decision will be made on August 13th as to whether the restrictions will be lifted. The rules have already led to the postponement of events such as Dekmantel Festival.
